i love you enough to let you hate me.

I have a dear friend who is walking through an especially tough chapter of their story.

I was speaking with them this week, and they shared that someone had spoken this truth into their heartache:

“I love you enough to let you hate me.”

Let me back up: Hatred is spilling over into this persons story from someone who is so angry they can’t see straight. Or walk straight. Or live straight.

Hatred has a horrible way of doing that, doesn’t it?

The hatred is stemming from rebellion. From a heart that desires to do things it’s own way. The anger and hatred is boiling up over the fact that someone is enforcing Godly rules and boundaries and they’d rather just run wayward.

And instead of caving, the hated one is standing firm in their conviction and in their knowledge and love of the Lord. And for the sake of the one doing all the hating, they are allowing anger and hatred to be spewed their direction, because they love them too much to enable waywardness.

They have decided that the life that is being ruled by anger and hatred is too precious, and they love them too much to let live as they choose when it is to their own detriment.

But the hated one’s love for the angry one was so strong that they spoke the words, “I love you enough to let you hate me.”

The first time I heard the words I stood breathless for a few seconds.

I love you enough to let you hate me.”

Isn’t that a beautiful summary of the gospel? Does that not take your breath away?

Jesus loved us enough, that He let people hate Him. Hate him to the point of killing Him. So that our hate might be paid for. And so we might be redeemed.

So our lives might be restored.

So our stories might be different.

So that we would know the grace that would allow us to say to someone else “I love you enough to let you hate me.”

“If the world hates you, keep it mind it hated me first.” John 15:18

“I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love.” Mother Theresa.

I love you enough to let you hate me.

Love,

katie
